Two nights in West Virginia

I am hitting my threshhold for "vacationing" with my mom. Not that I don't like her, but I tend to like my space and my alone time, and I've had neither for the last 8 days. It wouldn't be so bad but the moments that I really most definitely need that space, she seems to stick closer or something.

Need to get home and b-r-e-a-t-h-e. Maybe by this time tomorrow.

I was in FL

Ok, so I was in Florida. We had the 6th family funeral in 12 months this week. But--this time it was allowed. My grandma's brother, Charles, was 87. He was pretty awesome. Ran off to California when we was 16. Seems like 70 years ago that was ok, and people got cool life experience. Now, they are called runaways and usually end up as burn outs.

The rest of the week, my mom took care of stuff she needed to take care of. We decided we'd go to WDW at some point during the week. We were going to go on Wednesday. We never got around to it, so on Thursday we went. One reason we were going was because a friend wanted these candles from the Norway pavillion. They are the same scent as the Laila perfume by Geir Ness. So, we get to Epcot and go directly to Norway. As we walk up to the entrance to the Puffin's Roost (the store that sells the perfume) there's a sign saying that Geir Ness is there that day from noon - 7pm. OMG! It was about 430 or so. OMG!! I met Geir Ness. For those of you who are asking "Who is Geir Ness?" He created the scent Laila. It's awesome! and it's allergen free, so I don't react to it. Check out the website and find where you can try it in person. Actually, it's so nice, go ahead and order a bottle. You'll more than likely like it. It's really just that good! Also ran over and saw some friends from work. woo woo!

Why is it I don't live in the sub-tropical region of the US anymore, but have experienced the outer bands of three of the major hurricanes this year?

wow

Today I went to Covington, Indiana. It's just across the stateline from Danville. I went armed with copies of old photos. I got to meet the only first cousin of my grandpa Hall. She's a woman who I didn't know existed until a few years ago, and she's 93! She identified a photo I'd suspected were her grandparents, my great great grandparents. I get to go back sometime when her daughter is there who can SEE photos well enough and read the backs. This could be really cool!

shame on the mayor

I really don't like Mr. Nagin. I don't blindly support this President just b/c I vote as Republican. I don't necessarily agree with him. I say Shame on Ray Nagin because he started this war of words and finger pointing last week yet he is the Commander and Chief of New Orleans so to speak. He's the one who didn't have a plan to get the people moved out in the couple days before the storm hit. There was time, where they could have at least STARTED an attempt at moving these people. I've heard and read all of his BS about it's the Federal government's job to take care....NO, first it's HIS job, then the GOVERNOR's job, THEN the Fed's job. Shame on him!

Ok...deep breath!

so trying

I decided tonight it's probably good that I don't have cable. I'd be glued to the television 24/7, watching all of this terrible craziness going on about 800 miles south of here. I don't have money to give, and I can't stand sitting and watching. I keep trying to come up with ideas.

So far, as soon as someone gives the word, I already have two boxes of clothes to send to the South. They say they just want money right now, but at some point, these people are going to need clothes, and since a lot of these clothes are new with tags, why should people spend federal money going to the mall to buy full priced new clothes? I may just contact someone, somewhere down there and ship the boxes. I saw on Nightline tonight where the city of Houma, LA dodged the bullet and as soon as they realized they were ok, started preparing for the people who would evacuate to there. They aired clips of people sorting through boxes of clothes.

On a bigger scale, there's the housing issue. I've seen several of the websites now for people to offer space in their homes. If I didn't live alone and so far from there, I'd offer the bedroom at my house and sleep on my couch. SO, my idea is that state and federal governments should offer incentives to camps to house those who are displaced. It's the end of the summer and most camps are closing. While it is only temporary, camps tend to feel like a community. There's shelter, large kitchens for feeding the masses, open spaces, and some semblance of peace. If anyone reads this and has contacts with people who can pass this along to people who can do something, please do so. I sent this idea in an email to the White House and to the Louisiana governor. Gov. Barbour didn't have an email link. Hrmph!
